Guest Yoga Teacher Silvia Eriksson
Silvia Eriksson is a resident teacher in Montezuma who first fell in love with yoga back home in Denmark, and started practicing Hatha Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga in 2006. At first intimidated and challenged by the Asanas which were difficult for her healing body at the time, what drew her to come back was the sincere and encouraging guidance from her teachers and fellow students. The studio felt like a home and sacred space, her Yoga has since been a blossoming and evolving practice, and is her lifeline and her mat the most cherished place to come to again and again. It is her wish and privilege to share it with others.
She has been through many different turbulent and phases in her life, both physically and mentally since early childhood, and there was definitely a lack of connection and “grounding” from her soul, mind and body. Through first the physical movement practices of Ashtanga Yoga, and Pilates she slowly gained confidence and strength in her body, always humbled but gently encouraged by her teachers – who inspired her to make it her career to help others in the same way.
In 2009 Silvia travelled to Central and South America on her big adventure, she knew she needed to leave Europe for a while and see the world, little did she know that Montezuma and Anamaya would change her life. She fell in love with the simple life of Montezuma, the nature and found the connection she needed, a steady yoga practice and life in unison with nature and made this her home. She learned that we do not need a lot, just a sense of contentment and ease and self-challenge through Practice and everything else will fall into place with trust and commitment.
As Anamaya was in its early phases, she had the opportunity to work here, and immediately was inspired by its mission and intention and had the privilege to partake in one of its first YTTs with Jaqueline Chiodo in 2011 and has been teaching ever since, both at Anamaya and at the local studio, Montezuma Yoga. She considers all her students who have come to her over the years, both at retreats at Anamaya and at her resident job her greatest teachers, and loves to work with them and help them grow and take something of this peaceful place back home with them.
Through authentic and carefully explained yoga sequences, Silvia offers a well-rounded practice that suits and includes all levels of practitioners. Each class is designed to offer variations of poses and assistance where needed, so every student can benefit at their own pace and grow stronger balancing strength, stamina and surrender.
Silvia’s Philosophy
Silvia’s Alignment based Vinyasa Flow teachings are steady and strong and in constant movement with the breath, with attention to detail and refining posture. She focuses on not only classical yoga postures, but also muscular isolation techniques that help you locate and pin-point the key muscles in your body that relate to the posture.
Sometimes we are used to certain patterns in our bodies and the way we move, sit and go about our daily lives that create an imbalance, a weakness or an over-usage of a certain area. And that includes our yoga practice, whether you a beginner or a more seasoned practitioner of yoga you will notice that certain postures use a specific muscle group but lets others sleep, or overstretches a place in your body and lets another compensate for it.
Once we find our patterns, and use exercises to strengthen and tone areas in our body and learn to use our yoga postures to aid this, we are able to be more conscious in our practice and then the real fun begins – a steady wholesome practice which connects your breathing to movement, keeps your attention in your postures creating strength and stamina, and then your practice truly becomes a moving meditation.
These are the intentions of Silvia’s teachings, which are inspired from her own transformation as a student of many talented teachers of movement. Her posture, ease and comfort in her own body, self confidence and trust have improved over the years and humbly wishes that others experience the same changes. All this leads up to creating a sacred and calm space in your body, your relationships, your surroundings and most of all in your mind so you can approach your life with more ease and confidence.
She also hopes to share her passion and knowledge of this beautiful place she has been living in for the past 9 years, and give you a taste for simple living and connection to nature as an inspiration for your practice and life back home. It will be a week of sun, yoga, adventures and good times together!
Workshops
Becoming Strong Through Creative Movement
This workshop is fun and energetic blend of cardio, strength and endurance training with great music and creative dance inspired sequences. It will complement the week’s yoga and go deeper into subjects touched on in classes, such as locating and strengthening your pelvic floor and core muscles, and we will work up to techniques for inversions as well. These two hours are about liberation, and freedom of expression by becoming strong and confident through movement and any level practitioner is welcome.
Duration: 2 hours
Partner Yoga
Delve deeper into your Yoga postures with help from a friend you will make this week at Anamaya. Working with a partner in yoga is amazing, not just for the fun inversions and supported poses, but also in classical postures, such as standing, seated, and reclined postures. You will learn how to breathe, move and support each other in this Partner yoga flow. There is nothing like getting a deep opening with the help of someone you trust, and also laugh and have fun as a group.
Duration: 2 hours
Price: Each workshop is $40 (or $70 for both)
