Guest Teacher Joni Hewitt
As a lifelong educator with passion and enthusiasm Joni brings her physical and emotional energy out of the classroom and onto the mat. She first discovered Yoga as a complement to her training as a marathon runner and triathlete, and as a supplement to her work as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer. In her yoga teacher training she was pleasantly surprised however to discover the deep healing power of Yoga through the amazing mind-body connection. With focus on pranayama and mindfulness, Joni works with people of all ages and all abilities from beginners to seasoned Yogi’s.
A 200-hour Registered Yoga Alliance teacher (RYT), Joni completed her yoga teacher training from Sacred Seeds Yoga School in Southern Maine. As a certified Balanced Athlete Coach, she incorporates these fundamentals to offer Yoga as maintenance to one’s athletic activities. Working with high school athletic teams, she offers sports specific yoga practices showing athletes how the practice of yoga can help build core strength, encourage proper breathing techniques and increase focus.
Always training and learning, Joni went on to study the Barre method and with these principals created her own unique version of Barre.fit yoga with focus on the importance of body sustainability. Whether teaching Restorative Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Barre.fit or Mindfulness practices, Joni’s passion for Yoga is contagious and her commitment to her students is always a constant.
Joni’s Philosophy
Joni considers the practice of yoga as an ideal form of self-care and wellness. She recognizes the value in living life with a strong connection between mind & body, and offers this awareness through teaching from this place of practice. Finding balance is the key! Knowing that it is not always easy, she shows her authentic self in the words she uses and in the teaching she offers. Adhering to her belief that yoga is for everybody, she teaches to whomever lands on the mat in front of her and relies on her strong understanding of anatomy and proper alignment to offer modifications and gentle assists. Simply put, the main philosophy of yoga is simple: mind, body and spirit are all one and cannot be clearly separated.
Workshops
Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga is the experience of simply being. To yield is to surrender. In the practice of Restorative Yoga, we actively and consciously yield as we surrender our tension to the force of gravity relaxing and softening throughout the practice. It is a pleasant experience because for most of us letting go of tension brings great relief to our body and mind. This yielding is not about collapsing into each posture, instead we actively acquire a dynamic relationship with our surrounding, leaving us present to the softening of stress and tension and present to what might be revealed in the act of letting go. This practice activates the parasympathetic nervous system by deliberately slowing us down. As you incorporate a restorative practice you’ll notice optimal comfort and ease, steady breath, lowering blood pressure and heart rates, relaxing tension, and greater balance. Why wouldn’t you try it?! This workshop will be 75 minutes and $30 (or $80 for all three).
Barre.fit Yoga
Fusing traditional fitness techniques from Pilates, Calisthenics and Yoga, this unique Barre.fit yoga practice is an athletic workout specifically designed to strengthen the entire body while lengthening the muscles and increasing flexibility. Class begins with gentle moves designed to increase the heart rate and build heat. Following the warm-up, you’ll move through a series of upper body exercises and isometric moves before continuing to the barre movements with a lower body workout for your thighs and gluteus muscles. Participants are encouraged to work at their own level, modifications are offered as needed. Continue your practice with core-focused progressions, push-ups and planks on the mat. End with a yoga flow of postures designed to re-stretch your muscles and complete your practice with Savasana. Enjoy your feeling of enhanced stamina & endurance, increased flexibility & calm and leave feeling even better than when you arrived! This workshop will be 75 minutes and $30 (or $80 for all three).
Essential Oils
“The mind lives in the past and the future; the oils bring you back to the present.” Essential oils are an excellent addition to any natural and healthy lifestyle. Weaving essential oils into your yoga practice can deepen and expand your experience in new dimensions with just a few pure, powerful healing drops. Both simple and complex, learn how a single oil or blend can be used for a specific intended purpose, and at the same time address multiple aspects of healing the body, mind and spirit. In this workshop, you will learn more about the oils and how they can help you with particular aspects of your health and well-being. This workshop will be 75 minutes and $30 (or $80 for all three).
