Guest Yoga Teachers

Mandy Lawson

Mandy Lawson, E- RYT 500 is Canadian born, but has called Costa Rica home for nearly seven years. She came to Anamaya for the very first yoga teacher training offered at the center, and fell in love in numerous ways. She followed her heart and decided to set her roots in paradise, where they continue to grow. Mandy is now married to a Tico (aka Costa Rican), and has a magical (almost) 5 year old daughter, as well as 3 equally magical step-daughters.

Mandy has over 15 years of experience in the fitness industry, and has been teaching yoga specifically for over 6 years. Prior to her focus on yoga Mandy worked as a personal trainer for individuals and groups. These days, most of her work life is spent traveling throughout North, Central and South America teaching Children’s Yoga Teacher Trainings in both English and Spanish. She loves teaching grown ups yoga too (but don’t be surprised if she breaks out some kiddie songs to shake things up once in a while!).

Working with people and feeling the connection that can be achieved through a group yoga practice is what keeps Mandy coming back for more retreats. She has a degree in Psychology and also is a certified hypnotherapist. She has always sought ways to help people achieve happiness and health on a fundamental level, and through yoga she is achieving this goal on a daily basis.

Lia Marie

Lia has a gypsy soul and loves to move. She was born and raised amongst the corn stalks in Iowa until she made her escape. She learned her Spanish in Oviedo, Spain then moved to Montezuma, Costa Rica. From 2009-2013, Lia spent many happy and tropical years teaching everything from zumba to aerial acrobatics in Montezuma.

However, Lia’s heart is yoga. In 2011, she started teaching at Anamaya as the in house yoga teacher until 2013. During that time, Lia taught what her certificate calls an “alignment based flow.” This is vinyasa yoga with a firm respect for alignment. Lia believes in the technique of talking over showing. This means that her cues immediately adapt to the students, their needs, and their understanding and is able to talk the students through their movements.

This technique is powerful because it allows the teacher to walk amidst her students and adjust each person individually. Lia does demonstrate during her classes, as well. Lia also taught free yoga classes in the park of Montezuma on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These classes used beach towels instead of yoga mats. In 2013, Lia moved to Portland, Oregon where she taught Yin yoga at Yo Yo Yogi and began her pursuit of a degree in physical therapy.

Continuing that pursuit, Lia is now in Richmond, VA where her practice has shifted from the stillness of Yin to the powerful rhythms of Ashtanga yoga. Lia is greatly looking forward to returning to Anamaya December 17-24, 2016, and maybe even seeing some of her old students!

In the practice Linea teaches you how to do pranayama (breath of fire) correctly with the specific intention to connect deeper with the authentic true Self within & to purify, strengthen and balance the body. Workshops

Week of Jan 6 – 13

Mandy Lawson is offering two special workshops this week. The price is $45 each or $90 for both.

Meditation for Stress Relief – Learn some basic meditation techniques to help calm your mind and body in times of stress. Even if you have tried meditation before and felt like you failed to achieve the desired outcome, this workshop can help you. We will explore different positions for meditation, techniques for going from many thoughts to a clearer mind, and how to know when you need meditation most. We will also discuss ways to discover where you hold tension in your body, and how meditation can help create a habit of attention and allow you to release stress and tension more easily on a daily basis.

Maya Making – Create a yoga retreat souvenir and meditation tool all in one! Mandy will guide you through the creation of your very own mala (yoga necklace), which you can wear with pride and also use to keep you focused for meditation. During this 90 minute workshop you will make the mala (don’t worry if you’re not crafty, you’ll get it), by knotting special twine that will be provided for you. You will also learn how to use the mala for meditation and the significance behind the different parts of the mala.

Week of Jan 20 – 27

This week we are excited to offer our guests a Tai Chi workshop lead by Barbara Cavalca. This workshop has two sessions that are 2 hours each. The price is $150 per person.

Tai Chi Workshop – This ancient, time-tested traditional Chinese method of self-development, is a subtle blend of the most refined Medical, Meditative and Martial knowledge combining self-discipline, graceful movement and effortless power.

Students develop increasing physical and mental skills, as awareness and understanding of all aspects of their self increases. You can learn and practise Tai Chi at your individual pace, and, as there are ever-new levels, throughout the rest of your life. These disciplines rely on a mindful re-discovery of the body to enrich and inspire one’s experience of any aspect of life.

Practitioners of yoga, dance or other martial arts often find that the internal and flowing approach of Tai Chi perfectly complements their own training.

This workshop will be lead by Barbara Cavalca. Since 1985, Barbara has been healing the body mind and spirit when she got her diploma in body work training in Switzerland. As a Taiji Quan bronze metal winner in China, she is fusing her extensive knowledge of the human body and her Devaya Yoga training to create a dynamic body work practice.
