MJ Shaw

MJ has been teaching everything dance and fitness related for almost 20 years. Yoga came to her 15 years ago as great physical training for dancers, but eventually evolved into much more than that; an integral part of her lifestyle and approach to all physical training for herself and her students. MJ teaches numerous classes at various clubs and studios in Toronto and across Canada & the US, as well as personal and small-group training in her home studio. MJ has presented at canfitpro, Idea City and has been featured on the Dr. OZ Show, CBC’s Steve & Chris Show, MTV, Much Music, Discovery Channel and many more, inspiring people to improve their lifestyle through physical and spiritual fitness. You can also see MJ busting her Booty Beat choreography on dozens of Flirty Girl Fitness DVDs. MJ believes that the collective energy of people coming together to better themselves results in amazing transformative experiences. MJ’s Yoga Philosophy:

My initial training was in Ashtanga, but I’ve since studied Iyengar, Kundalini and restorative techniques to balance out the physical and spiritual elements of the practice. Hence, my classes range from uber physically challenging to completely relaxing and chill. At retreats I like to balance this ying/yang approach with a more vigorous morning Vinyasa class to start the day, and a Restorative or Yin class to end it. I also like to approach each student individually, as in any given class there will yoga experts and beginners, and each should feel satisfied after class. I do this not only by providing options, but also by giving hands-on adjustments and advice. I’ve also been told that my approach is down-to-earth and filled with a good dose of humor, which I greatly appreciate, as we should all laugh as much as possible! I believe the power of a yoga class, is in the communal pursuit of something greater, despite the journey being an individual one on the surface. In a class setting we are energetically and positively entwined, returning to the meaning of ‘yoga’, which is ‘yolk’ or ‘all one’ – which is a beautiful thing that connects us all.

FITNESS & DANCE PACKAGE: $80

If you’d like to spruce your week up with some fitness, dance & variety, this is a great package for you! You’ll tighten, tone & sweat in the sun: it’s a beautiful thing. FIVE different 60-minute classes held on the private & shaded lower Yoga Deck.
ZUMBA: Dance fitness we’ve grown to know & love! Fun, easy choreography that you can bring to Chicos or back home! This class will focus on Latin dancing & music.
PILATES: Deep focused muscle conditioning that will target abdominal & upper body strengthening using your own body as resistance.
RETRO CARDIO: Another cardio dance class, but with a focus on disco, glam rock, old school hip-hop and overall dancing good times!
LOWER BODY BURN: Muscle conditioning that will target your abs, legs & booty! We’ll throw in some plyometrics to amp it up, perhaps even a H.I.I.T. or two.
POLE TRICKS or CHAIR DANCE: The group can choose! Want a dance to Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Britney… we can make it happen 🙂

 

PERSONAL FITNESS ASSESSMENT & PROGRAM: $85

One-on-one fitness assessment and program building to suit your individual needs and goals. Optional measurements and BMI (body mass index) assessment and short fitness test (5 one-minute drills), followed by discussion, exercise demonstration and program building. You’ll leave with a starting point from which to launch into achieving your fitness goals. 60 minute session.
